Mercury Insurance is one of the largest auto insurers in California. It also provides car insurance to motorists in these states: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Texas and Virginia. Mercury was founded in 1961 and sells a range of car insurance products, in addition to various types of property insurance, business insurance, and business auto insurance.
Pros and Cons
By limiting itself to only 11 states, Mercury is able to provide significant expertise in the areas where it operates. It’s a particularly big player in the California auto insurance market, operating all over the state and serving motorists from LA and the Bay Area through to rural areas. Another benefit to purchasing car insurance from Mercury is that it offers plenty of opportunities to lower your premiums. See the section on “Types of Auto Insurance” below for examples.
The flipside to Mercury’s low rates is that its customer service isn’t always great. A scan of online feedback from Mercury customers shows that some policyholders have had an easy time filing claims but others have reported long delays or unfair rejections.
Types of Auto Insurance
Mercury offers the following types of coverage:
Liability Protection. Includes Bodily Injury liability and Property Damage liability, both of which are compulsory forms of insurance in all the states where Mercury does business (although the minimum liability required by law varies between the states). This type of protection pays for damage caused to others if you’re at fault in an accident, including attorney expenses in the event you are sued.
Collision. Covers damages to your vehicle, regardless of who was at fault.
Comprehensive. Covers damages from events other than collision with a vehicle, such as: theft, vandalism, falling objects, fire, flood, or damage by animals.
Medical Coverage and Personal Injury Protection (PIP): Pays for your and your passengers’ medical expenses, including lost wages and funeral expenses if necessary.
Uninsured / Underinsured Motorists. Covers Bodily Injury and Property Damage liability for you and other passengers if another driver was at fault but doesn’t have sufficient insurance to cover their liabilities.
Rental Car. Gives you a rental car when your own vehicle is in the shop as a result of a covered loss.
Roadside Assistance. Provides emergency services when you get stuck – such as towing, battery jump-start, tire change, emergency fuel delivery, and locksmith services.
Ride-Hailing Insurance. Extends coverage to drivers working for Uber, Lyft, or other ride-sharing services. Coverage applies to you and your vehicle when your ride-sharing app is on, although terms vary somewhat between states.
Customers can earn discounts from the following rewards programs:
  • Bundling together your auto insurance with Mercury homeowners’ or renters’ insurance to create a multi-policy reward.
  • Earning discounts for insuring more than one vehicle with Mercury.
  • Installing an anti-theft device to give your vehicle added protection.
  • Maintaining a good driving record.
  • Policy holders with teenage drivers can earn extra reductions if their kids maintain good grades in school.
  • Participating in Mercury’s Real Drive verified mileage program. You’ll get a 5% discount just for signing up and keep the discount for as long as you remain in the program. Your rate will be based on how far you drive, which can lead to big savings if you use your car less frequently than the average driver.
There are three ways to get a quote and purchase car insurance: online, by calling Mercury, or by using its online tool to connect with an agent in your area. Whichever channel you select, the process is quick and easy and requires minimal documentation. To get started online, simply type in your zip code and press the button marked “Start your quote and save”.
You’ll then be asked to fill out the following details:
  • Personal information such as name, date of birth, phone number, email, and home address.
  • Vehicle information, such as year, make, model, annual mileage, the purpose for owning a vehicle, and the amount of years you’ve owned the vehicle.
  • Additional information about you and any other drivers you’d like to add to the policy, including your employment and level of education.
  • Information about your insurer and policies, if you have existing car insurance.
  • Finally, you’ll see a quote and be given an opportunity to add and remove certain types of coverage. If you’re satisfied, you can go ahead and add your billing details or call Mercury directly to complete the process using the reference number given to you online.
Filing a Claim
The only way to file a claim is by calling 800-503-3724. Unlike some insurers, Mercury doesn’t offer the option of filing online or through an app. However, it does offer a convenient way to get your vehicle repaired with its Customer Authorized Repair Service (CARS) facilities. You may also choose your own repair shop, if you wish.
